CANAAN-Walter Eugene Salisbury, 89, passed away at Inland Hospital in Waterville on March 17, 2017 with his family by his side.
He was born in Canaan on July 24, 1927, the son of Sewall B. Salsbury and Harriett M. Fowler and his step mother, Maude Gower Salsbury.
He attended the Canaan primary schools and graduated from Skowhegan High School, class of 1945. While in High School he was noted athlete, breaking previous state records in track and field events, especially in broad jump and 40 yard dash.

He was born in Canaan on July 24, 1927, the son of Sewall B. Salsbury and Harriett M. Fowler and his step mother, Maude Gower Salsbury.
He attended the Canaan primary schools and graduated from Skowhegan High School, class of 1945. While in High School he was noted athlete, breaking previous state records in track and field events, especially in broad jump and 40 yard dash.
He married Golden Ina Fitzgerald on July 14, 1950 in Canaan.
Walter lived in Canaan his whole life, where he owned and operated a farm, which raised dairy, poultry, sheep and beef cattle. He also drove school bus for Canaan school system.
He loved gardening, tinkering on his farm equipment and proudly maintained a couple of John Deere tractors from the 1960s, that are still in active use today. He loved animals, whether his farm livestock, wild birds, cats and dogs.
He is survived by his wife Golden of 66 years, of Canaan, four children: Gale Susan Staples of Summerville, South Carolina, Kimbley Ann DeGruchy of South Portland, Cheryl Lee Pratt of Canaan, and Ann Felicia Walker of Canaan; grandchildren: Todd Vachon, Britt Connor, Ryan Staples, Nathaniel DeGruchy, Andrew Pratt, Ashlee Landry, and Clay Landry; great grandchildren: Will Vachon, Ben Vachon, Garrett DeGruchy, Katlyn Clarke, Connor Landry-Cooley, and Matthew Landry-Cooley.
He is predeceased by one son, Darrell Eugene (died 1956), one brother, Richard G. Salisbury- M.I.A. from World War II.
A graveside service at the Fairview Cemetery in Canaan will be announced later in the spring.
